To get to the most magical sunrise that Suriname had to offer, we had to board several buses that continuously got smaller and more off-road. Eventually we reached the Fredberg basecamp where we repacked our stuff and equipped with only cameras, a few clothes, a hammock, and some water, started our hike with the group to the top of the mountain.
Just in time for sunset we had a first chance to take in the amazing scenery. After a delicious dinner cooked by our guides, we set up camp and slept in the hammock for the night. Luckily the mosquitos don’t fly to this altitude (although the mountain was far from high).
An early wake-up presented us with the most beautiful view we could’ve imagined! As the sun was rising over the seemingly endless forest, the mist and clouds drifted through the trees. Here, the pictures really don’t do the magical atmosphere justice! β¨
After breakfast with freshly baked pancakes (all food and ingredients had to be carried up by hand), we set out to find the Cock-of-the-rock, a neon-colored bird native to South America. The groups from the days before were unlucky, so hope was slim. As we were the ones with the best camera, the guides pushed us to the front of the group. Then for a few moments we were able to see it through the thick bush. I was able to snap two good photos and then it flew away.
Once packed up, we headed back down to the basecamp for another quiet night in a real bed before continuing our journey onwards.
