Weeknotes no.6 – weeknotes are great

elevation

these weeknotes are a great thing because they force me to think about the past week. which trends happened, what did i learn, what’s going on?

i feel like every time you open one of the social networks, there’s a new ai model. there are more new tools than anyone has time to try.

it also feels interesting how the different platforms (e.g. twitter, bluesky, mastodon) and their respective user bases are approaching ai wildly differently. some are more open to it, some are more cautious. and if you say the wrong thing, you’ll get a lecture.

there have been a couple of interesting posts exploring the ai adoption in the early adopters vs. general public. while that has been a usual hype-cycle playbook for most trends in the past, this one comes with its own fun little twist: memory and chip shortage .

given the overall fairly small amount of people that are actually using these platforms and the potential for growth, this is gonna be an interesting time for all the chip manufacturers. and as ai models are only going to get bigger and bigger, demand for chips is only going to increase.

the new CEO of Bluesky just gave a lengthy interview to The Verge about his vision for the platform. 🦋

We all know that the public square, public social networking has reached a certain scale. And there are a lot of people who want to retreat into more private spaces. We’ve seen explosive growth in group chats. We’re all in a million group chats. This has been the number-one request from our community, from our developers: “Let us build more private, membership-based, various versions of private spaces on this protocol.”

interestingly, one of the big things they seem to be working on are private communities. in a world full of public social media timelines this seems like an interesting approach. but maybe that’s where things are heading. if you think about it, most of the Fediverse already works that way — nowhere near big-network scale, but full of small, active private communities.

it’s also the playbook that most influencers are following, since it’s one of the few ways to monetize their content. exclusivity sells.
